Inish Knits is More Than Just a Yarn Store

The knitters, crocheters and spinners of Leelanau County and the Grand Traverse Region have helped Inish Knits become more than just a yarn store. Our customers have made Inish Knits the emotional hearth of the community by coming together every week to just sit and knit or spin during our Free Knitting Nights on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and our Free Spinning Nights on Wednesdays evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Knit One Purl Two Plus So Much More!

Mixed and knit together, we have found that every evening provides a community atmosphere for every skill level from beginner to advanced. There is always someone on hand to offer expert advice from practical hands-on experience, technical and emotional support, instruction, or to answer the simplest of questions. We'd like to think that with the follow-up Inish Knits provides to your projects, a bit of the owner goes home with every project.

What Are You Working On?

Please join us when you can. Bring an existing project or start a new project. Browse through our shelves and racks full of pattern books and match the yarns you need to create your next item. Inish Knits can help to get you started on your new knitting adventure.

A Spinning Wheel in Every Corner

At Inish Knits we celebrate all spun fibers. Getting fiber ready to spin begins with carding - a process to get all the fibers aligned in one single direction. Once gathered, the spinning begins to create the first ply of yarn.

Indulge yourself in the timeless and tranquil art of spinning. The cadence and rhythm of coordinating the motion of the foot pedals with the feeding of the fiber through the orifice is hypnotic, and more therapeutic than chocolate! Spin silk, wool, or cotton. Use one of many different styles of spinning wheels or a drop spindle to create your yarn. Once you have created your yarn you are ready to create your next masterpiece. Knit, crochet, or weave you handspun fibers. We stock an extensive selection of books, magazines and pattern books which provide all the instruction you will need, in addition to follow-up support.

Do You Have.....?

One of the best things about having an open Yarn Shoppe in Leelanau County are the customers who come through our doors. Every day we get so many questions and comments about the store and the process of knitting. If you get in a bind, stop by Inish Knits; we are always happy to share any tips we might have.

I Don't Know What's Wrong

One statement we always welcome is when a customer says to us, "I don't know what's wrong." We know that every project and every question is as different as every piece of knitted fabric. We want to be your source for knitting, crochet and spinning answers. Please, stop by and ask the questions-let us help you with your fiber project.

I Need to Finish Up All My Projects First

This is the universal mantra of every creative person. Who among us has not said this at least once or twice? This is something else we hear many times every day. It's hard not to be inspired to create and knit when you walk into Inish Knits. Our hope is that surrounding you with the visual and tactile sensations of our extensive variety of yarns that you will want to add another project to your knitting basket. We consider ourselves-there's always something to do! We have your next project waiting for you!

The Name Inish Knits

We get asked all the time about the meaning of Inish Knits. Inish is the Gaelic word for "island", most specifically the three Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland-Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer. The knitting styles and methods developed by these coastal fishermen in the mid-17th century serve as the foundation of modern hand knitting today.

Inish Knits is a Touchable Place

We would like to to think that our customers think of Inish Knits as their shop too. We welcome being intricately involved with your knitting projects. Inish Knits is a touchable place-we encourage you to drop by to knit with us, wherever you are in your knitting, crocheting or spinning.
